Visual (Research Blog #6)


This is the cover of a book I am using as a source in my paper. It includes various important details, including statistics, statements on the lack of attention paid to the issues of food and housing insecurity, and reasons why students are still experiencing food and housing insecurity despite the availability of federal assistance through various programs.


I plan on quoting the book in my presentation because of how well it expresses the depth of the problems of food and housing insecurity and lack of awareness of the issue. The quotes is, 

“The best estimates suggest that food insecurity affects as many as one in two college students (three times the rate in the general population); just as many strug­gle with housing insecurity, and a significant number are homeless. Yet this remains a largely invisible prob­lem, hidden from public view. ... But it is time to get real and admit that we in higher education have a serious prob­lem” (Food Insecurity on Campus: Action and Intervention viii)


Since this quote is somewhat long, I will probably use the image of the book cover as a placeholder instead of including the whole quote. Additionally, the empty plate shown on the cover is a common symbol for hunger, which could help the audience understand what I am talking about and what an aspect of food insecurity is.

Scouting The Territory (Research Blog #2)

Since Blog #1, I have decided to expand my topic to include housing insecurity/homelessness among college students. Taking Professor Goeller’s advice, I decided it would be a good addition to my original topic and would result in a greater exploration of impoverished students. I will now be researching food and housing insecurity among college students. The key terms that were most useful include “food insecurity college,” “housing insecurity college,” and “college student homelessness.” I found articles, books, and government documents that discuss causes, statistics, what food and housing insecurity look like, how the problems should be addressed (by colleges and by the government), and the consequences of food and housing insecurity. Initial Topic Idea (Research Blog #1)

For the project, I am thinking about exploring the topic of food insecurity among college students. While many recognize that the cost of college is high (and continuing to get higher), they may not consider how, due to the financial strain put on students and their families, the students may have other needs, such as food, that are left unfulfilled. Financial aid, loans, and jobs only go so far. For some, they do not cover enough. My research would likely include statistics related to the issue, the impact of food insecurity on college students’ education and health, what steps are being taken to help combat this issue, and what more can be done.
