Revised Research Questions and Current Works Cited (Research Blog #5)

With the rising costs of college, the financial strain put on students and their families is increasing, causing some students’ needs, such as food and stable housing, to be left unmet. I will explore the questions of: Why are students experiencing food and housing insecurity? How do these issues impact students’ education and wellbeing? How are these issues being addressed and what more can be done?

  Abstract This research paper explores the causes, prevalence, and impacts of food and housing insecurity among college students. Data regarding the issues are included, revealing that as many as one in two college students experience food and/or housing insecurity. The paper connects the issues to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs to reveal how basic, physiological needs must be met before individuals can achieve other needs. It also examines the programs colleges and the government have established to help students with their individual needs related to food and housing. Ultimately, the paper argues that college students’ increased vulnerability and exposure to food and housing insecurity is indicative of neoliberal policies at the state and federal level that have systemically impoverished middle-class and low-income students, requiring significant and widespread government funding to address. Initial Topic Idea (Research Blog #1)

For the project, I am thinking about exploring the topic of food insecurity among college students. While many recognize that the cost of college is high (and continuing to get higher), they may not consider how, due to the financial strain put on students and their families, the students may have other needs, such as food, that are left unfulfilled. Financial aid, loans, and jobs only go so far. For some, they do not cover enough. My research would likely include statistics related to the issue, the impact of food insecurity on college students’ education and health, what steps are being taken to help combat this issue, and what more can be done.

Scouting The Territory (Research Blog #2)

Since Blog #1, I have decided to expand my topic to include housing insecurity/homelessness among college students. Taking Professor Goeller’s advice, I decided it would be a good addition to my original topic and would result in a greater exploration of impoverished students. I will now be researching food and housing insecurity among college students. The key terms that were most useful include “food insecurity college,” “housing insecurity college,” and “college student homelessness.” I found articles, books, and government documents that discuss causes, statistics, what food and housing insecurity look like, how the problems should be addressed (by colleges and by the government), and the consequences of food and housing insecurity.
